Did you know that there is both good and bad cholesterol? And the more good cholesterol you have, the better it is for you?
If you have had a heart attack or stroke, you will know about cholesterol and the need to keep its level low. It can be a struggle, but a good diet, plenty of exercise and statins (medications
that lower bad cholesterol) can help.
But did you know that there is a good type of cholesterol? And the more good cholesterol you have, the better – because it may help to prevent further heart attacks and strokes.
REVEAL: what is the purpose?
REVEAL is a study to see if raising levels of good cholesterol and further lowering levels of bad cholesterol can save more lives and reduce the chance of having a heart attack, stroke, or other heart complications. REVEAL is doing this by testing a drug called anacetrapib that has been shown to raise levels of good cholesterol and lower levels of bad cholesterol in your blood.
About 30,000 people in the UK, USA, Canada, Scandinavia, Italy, Germany and China will take part in the REVEAL study.
Why me?
You may be interested to consider participation in the REVEAL Study if you are at least 50 years old and have either 1) a history of vascular disease (such as a prior heart attack, stroke, or peripheral arterial disease) or 2) have diabetes with a history of chest pains requiring treatment or hospitalization.
You can take part whether or not you are already taking
a statin to reduce your bad cholesterol. This is because statins can take part in this study is not looking at statins. Statins have been this study’. tried and tested successfully in similar studies over many
years – to provide the evidence that they are safe and help protect people from heart attacks and strokes. All patients in this study will be given a statin to take each day, in addition to the study drug.
If you are selected to participate in the REVEAL study, you will have a 50% chance of receiving active anacetrapib. Half of the participants enrolled will receive active anacetrapib, and half will receive placebo, a tablet that looks like anacetrapib, but contains no active drug. Neither you nor the study doctor will know if you are taking the active or inactive tablet during the study.
Lowering bad cholesterol
Everyone taking part in REVEAL will be given an FDA-approved statin to reduce their bad cholesterol. You will be asked to take a statin called atorvastatin (marketed in North America
as “Lipitor”). This may mean that you have to change from your current treatment. However, all statins work in very much the same way. Atorvastatin has been shown in large studies to be safe. It is an effective treatment for lowering levels of bad cholesterol and has been shown to help protect against heart attacks and strokes.
You will be given a dose of atorvastatin (either 20mg or 80mg), depending on your current cholesterol levels. During the study, we (the study doctor and study staff) will aim to get your total cholesterol to the current recommended target (below 155 mg/dL or 4.0 mmol/L).
